In essence, every electric car is a potential sports car… and that’s well understood at BMW. And wonderfully implemented!
A beast!
If you want to, because you can also simply cruise through traffic with it.
But then you must stay off that Sport Boost button!
I'm not much for sporty driving, concentration problems and overconfidence are perhaps the most important reasons, but I really wanted to test drive that very handsome i4, preferably in the most performant version: the M50. Yes, the legendary M version of an electric car.
Of course, there are things I would rather have seen differently. Or heard, in case of the mechanical sounds of the central locking.
The set-up of the large display is not great from certain angles…
And the artificial noise inside the car when accelerating is not really making my day either. Composed by Hans Zimmer, a top performer, but I prefer his film music…
(In the meantime I was told this can be turned off!)
At the back the space is normal, for this size of car, only there is a center tunnel so you should assume there’s room for four adults.
Who wants to sit in the back of an M50, anyway?
The once subtle kidneys in the center of the nose have now become an oversized statement. But on a dark model this is not so noticeable, and with a lighter colored model they can perhaps be painted? I personally wouldn't go for contrast, but I guess many think differently about it.
Nevertheless, all of this does not outweigh the driving pleasure. Small concessions to arrive at a phenomenal car, one you don’t purchase for practical or economical reasons, but for the sake of emotion and driving pleasure.
Because there is little else to complain about the car. The interior in the front is compact but leaves enough room to stay comfortable and it is focused towards the driver. The sports seats are brilliant and even with more enthusiastic driving they will keep you in place. The steering wheel contains quite a few buttons, but once you get used to them, they are super handy and promote concentration on the road.
The lane assist once let me down by avoiding the center threshold too late, and therefore too abruptly. Or could that have been due to the inappropriate speed of the car, and therefore to the driver?
All possible information is available on the giant LCD screen, even the most recent news items. It is up to the driver to select what is crucial information for him or her to be displayed. Music can probably be chosen from every possible source, only a live orchestra in the back seat will be a substantial additional cost. Subtle sound is of course guaranteed by the Harman Kardon Surround Sound System!
It's a bit silly, and that's exactly how it feels, to put your BMW in “EcoPro”. However, the most economical and safest setting you will find on this machine. But it just doesn't feel right...
You constantly have the feeling that the car wants to slow you down, especially if you also drive in brake (B) to recover as much energy as possible when braking. “Slow and steady wins the race” is not exactly the motto of the M-BMWs. But I do believe, based on the short time I used EcoPro, that you'll gain tens of miles on a full battery. Could come in handy!
On the other hand, I assume that, if eco and brake are your thing, you will go for a different model or brand…
The "Comfort" position is more my kind of ride, but let's be honest: there is an "M" in comfort. Somewhere. But that has nothing to do with what it stands for at BMW.
“Sport Boost”, my friends, that's what you want when you find the right roads with such a car. It all gets a little more enthusiastic with specific M-oriented settings and an incredible boost (for 10 seconds to 795 Nm) when accelerating. Go off with that fantastic, electric family sports car! The four-wheel drive puts the power smoothly on the track, all the safety systems are in place to keep you there. On the track, I mean.
Great!
The reference for sporty electric driving!
This is food for enthusiasts, preferably with some experience.
For people who use electric driving in practice: the 490 km range is easily achieved in “Comfort” and exceeded in “EcoPro”. One-pedal driving is perfectly possible in “EcoPro” and in “Comfort” combined with the “B” position of the gear lever. Yes. Gear lever. Reverse, neutral and forward, whether or not in the “B” of brake mode, thus actively regenerating energy when braking.
I assume that this is no different in the more moderate i4 40 version that promises a range of 590 km! This will certainly be able to convince the less emotional emotional.
